Permits Required
Many renovations need a building permit, and some also need trade permits. We confirm what applies before work starts. Review the City of Calgary renovation and basement pages for official guidelines.
Foundation Wall Openings
Cutting a large opening in a foundation wall, for example one longer than 1.2 m or more than 25% of the wall length, needs an engineer's review.
Basement Suites
A basement with both a kitchen and a bathroom is treated as a secondary suite, which has its own requirements. A wet bar cannot include cooking appliances.
Older Homes
Houses built before 1990 may contain asbestos, and an asbestos form is part of the permit process.
Inspections
The framing is inspected before it is covered, so the work is checked while it can still be seen.

Do I need a permit for a renovation in Calgary?
Many renovations do, especially structural changes, basement development and additions. We confirm the permits needed for your scope before work starts.
Can you remove a wall in my house?
Often yes, but first the wall has to be identified as load-bearing or not, and a beam may be needed. Our engineering partner can review it.
Can a basement have a kitchen?
A basement with a kitchen and a bathroom is treated as a secondary suite and has its own rules. Tell us your plan early so the design and permit match it.
Do you handle the permits?
